Research interests

My current research focuses on sustainable food systems and food security, under the challenge of meeting Net Zero. My most recent projects use life cycle assessment to explore the environmental impacts (including carbon footprint) of national crop production under different growing methods. This encompasses the use of controlled system agriculture, such as vertical farming, as well as green agriculture in open field systems. It compares these results to the impacts of imported agricultural commodities to gain a global perspective on Scottish food production and consumption. In addition, work is ongoing into the environmental impacts of food and drink processing within Scotland to continue the research down the production chain. The purpose of this research overall is to identify sustainable production and processing methods, identify hotspots and offer suggestions as to best practice.
