Abstract

The non-cellulosic carbohydrate compositions of 25 tropical hardwoods from Ghana were determined by acid methanolysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The total amounts of non-cellulosic carbohydrates for the tropical hardwoods, varying to a great extent, ranged between 12.1-26.9% (w/w). A large variation was also recorded within the species from the same tree families. Pectins of the studied samples contained considerably high galacturonic acid to rhamnose ratios, of about 2:1 to 3:1.
